Yes you are right about the slight shakiness of the images, my last two Sony camcorders have both had image stabilisers inbuilt, you really have to think hard about how you are holding it or try and rest it on something etc.
That said for the price, quality and convenience I don't think it can be beat.

There are some reasonable quality HD clips on YouTube already, that give a reasonable impression, e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZqznWNsVVA.

Looks a little shaky (lack of image stabiliser), but for the price / size / convenience it looks good value for me. Very tempted. I believe you can also get mini-tripods too to enable you to stand the unit and improve stability?

Yes it is similar to the Flip HD but the Vado has a removable battery and the Vado has 8gb against the Flip's 4gb storage.
Which means the Vado can store 2 hours of HD footage where as the Flip can only store 1 hour. These are the two main reasons I went for the Vado.

The battery claims to have up to 2 hours run-time but is removable so you could carry a spare if needed. I've not tested this yet.

There is no slot for expansion, it records for 2 hours and 10 minutes on the inbuilt 8gb memory.

It's not designed to be a replacement for a mid to top end camcorder in my opinion but more for convenience with good quality. It can be slipped in the pocket without any problem, for me this is a big bonus.

Not sure where I could upload some samples? Youtube does have a HD upload but not sure how effective it will be to demo it?
